Raksha Bandhan 2021 is almost here and siblings are busy planning surprises for each other. After all, it's the day to celebrate their bond. On this day sisters tie rakhis on the wrist of their brothers and pray for their long life, while brothers too give her gifts and promise to protect her. Ahead of Raksha Bandhan, markets are flooded with beautiful and colourful rakhis as the festival of threads draws near.

However, every year millions of rakhis are dumped in waste that are made of non-biodegradable materials and adds to the carbon footprints. We can be responsible to our environment by making rakhis at home with eco-friendly materials instead of plastics, sparkles, beads etc.
The trend of edible rakhis too is catching on and is worth considering. Here are some DIY rakhi ideas that we found on internet and are must-try thanks to their eco-friendly appeal.

1. Rakhi made of rice

This is something which is quite easy to make, considering its availability. All you have to do is cut a cardboard in circular shape, add glue to it and stick rice grains in circular pattern. You can take mouli thread, shred it into small pieces and stick them at the centre of your cardboard piece. After the front part is done, you can stick a thread of your choice at the back to complete the rakhi.
2. Chocolate rakhi

You can tie it around the wrist of your brother on Raksha Bandhan and later enjoy eating this dessert-cum-rakhi with him. There are plenty of videos available on YouTube to guide you through the process. You can melt chocolate and put it in small moulds of the shape of your choice and add your favourite dry fruits. After your tiny chocolates are set, you can stick thread to it, and it's ready.
3. Rakhi made of pasta

If your brother is a pasta lover, you can make a rakhi out of his favourite food. You can get creative by colouring the pasta pieces with your favourite colours and just like rice rakhi, you can make this one too.
