The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have decided to organise joint rallies of their party chiefs Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav to give momentum to the Lok Sabha election campaign.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had given an indication to this effect at a press conference on Sunday. He had said the alliance leaders will take their policies and programmes to the people. The dates for the alliance leaders’ joint rallies will be announced soon, he had said.

Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, whose party is part of the alliance, will share the stage with the BSP-SP leaders. An RLD leader said the party had urged the alliance partners to organise a joint rally in Meerut in the heart of west UP. The constituencies going to poll in the first phase on April 11 were located adjacent to Meerut, he said.

A senior BSP leader said the party chief was busy finalizing the list of candidates for the 38 seats allotted to the party in Uttar Pradesh.

She was also screening candidates for seats in other states. The list of candidates will be released within a week and the party chief will launch her election campaign thereafter, he said.

Initially, the joint rallies of the BSP and the SP chiefs will be organised in west UP, where the seven-phase poll will start on April 11, he said.

Mayawati had directed party office bearers to organise meetings at divisional and district headquarters across the state to galvanize the cadre for the Lok Sabha election.

Once the meetings conclude by March 15, the office bearers will gather feedback from the grass root workers and submit a report to the BSP chief.

For his part, Akhilesh Yadav is also finalising his party’s candidates for various seats. The SP has already released a list of nine candidates. Replying to a question on Sunday, Akhilesh had said the list of the remaining candidates will be released soon. The alliance will call upon the people to vote for change, he said.
