Any candidate contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha election can spend a maximum of ₹70 lakh, while maintaining a record of all the expenditures.
Also, these candidates can’t make cash payments above ₹10,000 to a vendor and for payments of a higher amount, they will either have to issue cheques or make online payments. A candidate or his agent also can’t carry more than ₹50,000 cash while travelling, during the polls, said Amit Khatri, deputy commissioner and returning officer, during a training workshop for election officials from nine assembly constituencies that form the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat.
Over 20 lakh voters will cast their votes on May 12 in Gurugram and nine other seats in Haryana in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polls.
According to a statement released by the administration, Khatri told officials that they will have to maintain a shadow expenditure register of every candidate, which shall be compared to check the actual spending. A candidate or his supporter is not allowed to carry more than ₹50,000 in cash and if election and other material are kept in the vehicle, its value should not be more than ₹10,000. However, a star campaigner is allowed to keep up to ₹1 lakh in cash.
Khatri also said that once the election notification is issued, strict checking and barricading would be carried out across the constituency to prevent any suspicious movement of cash or material.
