Want to sink your teeth into a mango? You can place an order online this summer and get a portable tree laden with the king of fruits at your doorstep.

That’s the business model Mohammed Miyan, a farmer from Mujasa village in Malihabad’s world-famous mango belt, has come up with.

Each tree priced at Rs 2,000-Rs 3,000 can be ordered through the WhatsApp number 09559508020 or by making a call to the same number.

“Initially, we will entertain orders only from Lucknow and Delhi. Other districts and states can be covered as well,” he says.

Mohammad Miyan has dedicated a section of his three-hectare orchard for preparing portable mango trees. The bigger mango trees grow in the rest of the orchard.

“In one section, we are preparing mango trees in half-iron drums which are deliverable that too without posing any hazard to the trees,” says the mango grower. He clarifies these are small plants, not a bonsai.

He also says the trees will be ready with the fruit by May-end. Initially, he has prepared 100 trees on deliverable platforms.

The varieties of the fruit on offer include the rare, bright red and yellow Husnara, the green and yellow Amrapali and Malihabad’s USP Dussheri.

Having got the idea from e-commerce sites, he says: “If these sites can do it, why can’t I? Hence, I started nurturing mango trees around two years ago so that they can yield maximum fruits even in a portable state.”

“Only healthy trees are nurtured in order to yield a good crop. The trees are two year old and measure between four and five feet in height. They will yield five to six kg mangoes every season,” he told HT.

If all goes according to plan, portable mango trees will find a pride of place in the concrete jungle.
