To save a life, you don’t need to move a muscle. By donating just one unit of blood, you can save three lives and the apt day would be World Blood Donor Day, Friday (June 14).
Doctors say donating blood not only saves the life of the recipient but also of the donor, whose blood is screened for fatal infections such as HIV and Hepatitis C before being transfused to a patient.
“If there is infection in the donated blood, the donor is informed and by treatment his life is also saved. So donating blood is not just humane but also of benefit to the self,” said Dr Malay Kant Singh.
One can donate blood at the blood bank run by Lucknow Nursing Home Association (LNHA) and other blood banks. The LNHA has organised blood donation camp in association with Hindustan Times. “The blood donated is replaced with fresh blood,” said Dr SK Bhasin, director LNHA blood bank.
Lucknowites can donate blood at various blood banks including the state blood bank at KGMU, Balrampur hospital, Civil hospital, Lohia hospital, Vivekananda polyclinic, or at the camps organised to help patients. Since the shelf life of donated blood is short, one can donate at regular intervals so that there is no shortage of this life-saving fluid.
