The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday requested the Election Commission to reconsider its decision of postponing counting of votes from tomorrow to January 13 for the Vidhan Parishad polls.
A request to this effect has been made through a letter sent to the Commission urging it to allow counting of votes as per schedule, cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told newspersons in Lucknow.
Claiming no discrepancy in voting right of nominated members of the urban local bodies on which there had been a petition in the Allahabad high court which has formed the basis for postponement of the counting, he said once the election process had been set in motion it should not be disrupted midway till its completion.
"Had there been any confusion it should have been settled before the start of the process," Singh said.
The cabinet secretary also took exception to the EC not consulting the state government before taking a decision. 'As the state government is involved right from the beginning in preparing the electoral rolls to the declaration of results, it ought to have been consulted before postponing the counting," Singh said.
