Poles and wires but no current in Lucknow

That there are a number of villages in the state without power connections does not come as a surprise.
But the fact that there is a colony without power connections right in the middle of the city is certainly surprising.
Residents of Kanshiram Shahri Garib Awas Yojana are living in the middle of the city but they do not have power connections in their houses .
They belong to the weaker section of society and LESA authorities are not heeding their demand.
The District Urban Development Authority (DUDA), which is responsible for providing civic infrastructure in these houses for urban poor, has never bothered to ensure that their homes are lit up.
Project officer DUDA SC Varma said, “The LESA was given the responsibility of providing power connections in these houses but the power officials are avoiding it. They want money to be paid for connection despite the government order which says that LESA will have to provide connections for urban poor free of cost. At present, there are poles and wires but no current runs through them.”
A resident of the colony Dilip said, “There are about 100 families living here in miserable condition. At night it is totally dark, with mosquitoes all around. Our families feel unsafe because there is no street light. We have spent the summer without power, facing the scorching heat.”
Other residents like Jitendra, Rita, Ladli Begum, Mohammed Imran and Krishnawati said due to absence of power, there was no water supply and they had to fetch water from a hand pump.
As many as 1,500 flats were constructed for the urban poor in the first phase of the Kanshiram Shahri Garib Awas Yojna in Para in 2011.
Some of the families have been living there since then.
MD Madhyanchal AP Mishra told HT on phone, “Ideally one should pay for the power connections. Everything has got a cost and the power corporation is already running in loss. Despite all this, we will try to come out with a solution. The financial condition of LESA is not sound enough to provide free connections. Presently I am out of station and once I return, I will do something to provide connections to the houses in Para.”
