After completing a three-day Kranti Rath Yatra from Lucknow to Kanpur, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has now planned a week-long journey in Bundelkhand from September 19.
While chief minister Mayawati’s BSP has been trying to maintain its hold in Bundelkhand, the SP plans to widen its base by cashing in on the anti-incumbency factor. Bundelkhand is high on the agenda of SP, which did not fare well here in the 2007 assembly polls. Of the total 23 seats in the region, the SP won just four.
In the next phase of the yatra, the SP’s motorised rath led by state president Akhilesh Yadav is expected to visit all seven districts — Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi and Lalitpur — in the region.
Not to be left behind, the Congress has also stepped up its effort to woo voters. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already addressed a public meeting in Banda, where a special package was announced.
