The road to E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is always full of surprises and the latest to drop comes from one of the most popular action racing game series — Need For Speed(NFS). The first game came out in 1994, and since then, has spawned various sequels and iterations, each taking the racing experience to a different level.

Need For Speed Payback does the same as it takes the core NFS racing experience and manages to club it with the Hollywood-esque action appeal of the Fast & Furious movie franchise. The game sure does look good, and comes packed with some new and returning features.

Watch the trailer here:

Excited much? Here is all you need to know about the game.

Doing away with the idea of an unnamed racer taking the streets, this game will have three main characters behind the wheel — The Racer, The Showman and The Wheelman. The characters named Tyler, Mac and Jess will be your crew as you take on the single player storyline in the game.

The first thing that strikes you when you see the trailer is the Hollywood-esuqe appeal to the story. The theme of having a crew, high speed action, betrayal, payback and police chases make it a thrilling ride that carries all the signature elements of the Fast & Furious movies. In addition to all that. the crew has to take down ‘The House’, a cartel which has the area’s casinos, criminals and cops, all under their control.

Considering this game won’t be a strictly linear racing experience, one can expect the player to indulge in their fair share of mayhem. The game is said to have heists, blasts, crashes, takedowns and more, promising a blockbuster driving experience (that’s at least what the game’s executive producer describes it as).

The new game world in NFS Payback is full of different surrounding, a day and night cycle and various interactive elements. This ‘upgrade’ will allow players to enjoy the massive open world, that also is the largest playable map that the gave has ever had. There is a lot to explore, experience and enjoy.

With new surroundings and challenges, come new driving styles too. You can choose from tuner vehicles to off-road beauties and master whatever driving style you’re good at. Upgrades too, will help enhance your car’s performance and give you an immersive driving experience.

Cars in this game come in four core varieties— Race, Drift, Off-Road, Drag and Runner. The Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R, Nissan 350Z, Lamborghini Aventador, Datsun 240Z, Chevrolet Bel Air, Pagani Huayra BC, Ford Mustang (1965), BMW E46 M3 and the yet to be launched BMW M5 are just some of the cars we noticed in the trailer. And, if that is just a teaser, imagine what we are up for in the final product. Customisation will also be key to your performance in the game, and each car will have a different and specialised customisation capability.

Police chases are one of the most loved features in the series, and this game will allow them to be an offline feature too. Win your races, complete your heists, and earn your upgrades, all while going head to head with the original (and beloved) rivals — the cops. We’re thinking this is where the takedown feature will come in good use.
