A 38-year-old private cab driver was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly cheating a Mauritius national of Rs5,800 ($90) on the pretext of exchanging dollars with Indian currency at the domestic airport.

According to the police, the incident occurred on July 21 when the 35-year-old woman flew in from Mauritius and took a cab from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to the domestic airport. She works as an account manager in a private firm and had to board a flight to Kochi, where she was to train her firm’s employees.

Her cab driver Mohammad Taufiq Khan, 38, offered to exchange her dollars with Indian currency. The police said, he took a $100 note from her and gave her Rs6,400 in return. She again gave him a $100 note, but in return this time he just gave her Rs640, which is worth $10. The woman objected, but the man claimed she had only given him $10.

The woman rushed out as she had to take a flight. However, when she returned to Mumbai from Kochi on July 23, she approached the airport police and filed a complaint.

The police traced the accused and arrested him on Tuesday.
