Megha fought with one of her neighbours on Monday morning after she slipped in the alley. Her family said the neighbour had been washing clothes in the area and had failed to clean it after she was done, leaving it slippery. This led to an altercation between the two families. The Goregaon police were alerted and a non-cognisable complaint was registered.

“The police visited the area and warned them. However, both families got into a scuffle again in the evening,” said Vikram Deshmane, deputy commissioner of police, zone XI.

Megha and her sister went to the neighbour’s house that evening after their mother said Megha was hit with a bucket during the altercation. The neighbour was arguing with five others, when Rajesh arrived with a knife.

Officials said the group of six had been thrashing Megha and sister, which caused Rajesh to intervene.

They added that Megha and her sister fell during the scuffle. In the chaos, Rajesh fell on Mehga with the knife, stabbing her in the chest. She succumbed to the injury, after which the police registered a case of culpable homicide against seven people, including the victim’s father. The group of six were arrested.

The Goregaon police registered a case under sections 304 (culpable homicide), 143, 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
