Junior college admissions in Mumbai: Second merit list delayed to July 19

The announcement came following a July 12 Bombay high court ruling in connection with a litigation on the surrender of quota seats.

The announcement came following a July 12 order of the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court in connection with a litigation on the surrender of quota seats.

The Pune-based Shikshan Prasarak Mandali had filed a writ petition against the allowance given to colleges in Maharashtra to surrender their quota seats ahead of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP). The order, passed by justice ZA Haq and justice BP Dharmadhikari, said: “We direct the respondents [state government] to continue allotment of the central admission process students to non-minority institutes and after it is completed, if available, students shall be allotted minority institutes against such surrendered seats as an interim measure.”

Colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR) had surrendered their vacant quota seats once the CAP for general admissions began. Some of these seats were filled with general students on the basis of the first merit list. However, with the new order, such surrendered seats that are still vacant would have to be returned to colleges. Colleges can fill these seats as per the quota till the last round; they can be thrown open for all only at the end.
