According to the claims of whistleblower Sundar Singh, he was approached by one of the arrested accused back in 2014. Three of the arrested doctors, Singh said, came in touch with them a few months before he was operated on in March this year at the hospital in Powai, Mumbai. The case of Singh selling his kidney and being operated on at the same hospital is under the scanner and a fresh FIR is likely to be registered in his case.

Apart from this, recipient Brijkishore Jaiswal, in the present FIR, has told the police that he too was in touch with the arrested doctors and they were aware that the donor, Shobha, was not his wife. They allegedly went ahead with the procedure despite the knowledge. “There are many angles which are being probed to establish that the doctors were in touch with the accused. We are also checking their call records,” said a source on condition of anonymity.

Till now, 14 people have been arrested in connection with the case which was registered on July 14 at Powai police station under various sections of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy.

Based on the forged documents, the Powai police arrested Bijendra Hiralal Bisen alias Sandeep, 42, Kishen Brijkishore Jaiswal, 28, Iqbal Ahmed Mohammad Siddiqui Khan, 49, Bharatbhushan Baldevhari Sharma, 62, Nilesh Vitthal Kamble, 36, Khwaja Shamshuddin Patel, 66, Yusufsa Bismilla Divan, 45, Brijkishore Laxman Jaiswal, 48, Shobhana Thakur alias Shobha alias Rekha Devi, 42. While Kishen, Shobha, Brijkishore and Nilesh have got bail, the rest are in judicial custody.
