A 24-year-old man was attacked by a group of seven to eight men, as yet unidentified, near Naigaon, central Mumbai, very early on Monday, hours after he intervened in their fight with his younger brother’s friend.
The RAK Marg police station, which is investigating the case, said the victim, Sanket Popat Awhad, was on his way home around 12.10am after work when he saw his younger brother’s friend fighting with a group of older men near Naigaon police quarters.
When Awhad intervened and tried to help his brother’s friend, the men turned their attention to him, attacking him with leather belts, choppers and blade. Meanwhile, his brother’s friend ran away. When Awhad collapsed bleeding, the group fled too, leaving him behind.
People living nearby rushed Awhad to KEM Hospital in Parel, where he is being treated and is in a critical condition.
Police officials said they have registered a case of attempt to murder against unidentified men. “We are now working to identify and track down the attackers,” said a police officer from RAK Marg police station, who did not wish to be named. “We are questioning his brother’s friend to find out why they were fighting, too.”
