Mumbai criminal kills gang member over suspected affair with his wife

Police said the accused, Mahendra Solanki, has 11 cases of robbery and cheating registered against him.

A 36-year-old man and his associate were arrested by the crime branch of the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday for killing a member of his gang, whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife.

The victim has been identified as Anil Shelar.

Police said the accused, Mahendra Solanki, has 11 cases of robbery and cheating registered against him.

When Solanki was lodged in jail for a year in 2017, Shelar allegedly began an affair with his wife. Police said Solanki warned Shelar to stay away from his wife when he came out of prison.

“Since Shelar did not pay any heed, Solanki decided to kill him,” said Purshottam Karad, deputy commissioner of police (GRP).

Karad said Solanki and his accomplice, Ganesh Waghela, 27, beat Shelar, who was asleep near the Dadar platform, with iron rods on Saturday night. Solanki allegedly then slit him and left him to bleed to death.

According to police, Shelar was a history-sheeter with more than 21 criminal cases registered against him at various police stations across the city. Shelar, they found, had a wife and six daughters.

Police initially received a tip-off that Solanki was hiding in Nalla Sopara but later traced him to Khar. “He confessed that he was angry with Shelar and threatened to kill him,” said Karad.

Solanki and Waghela were arrested for murder and were presented before the court that remanded them in police custody.
