After wife ends life, Mumbai man held for demanding dowry

A 25-year-old man was recently arrested and booked for allegedly demanding dowry after his wife committed suicide at their residence in Andheri (West). The man has been accused of demanding money from his wife for purchasing a two-wheeler.

According to DN Nagar police, the accused, a resident of a chawl in Juhu gali, lived with his second wife, 22. It was her second marriage too. They two got married last year and hail from Uttar Pradesh. Neither of them had any children from their current or previous marriage.

The accused often fought with his wife, asking her to get money from her parents so that he could purchase a two-wheeler. He was struggling to find jobs owing to his poor educational background.

The woman committed suicide around 10am on February 6 after the accused stepped out to buy groceries. He was the first one to find her body hanging from the ceiling. The couple had fought on February 4, during which the accused had allegedly assaulted his wife for refusing to ask her parents for money.

The accused was arrested based on the complaint filed by the woman’s parents. He was booked under sections 304B (dowry death), 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty). The accused is police custody.
