By the end of this month, the Panvel regional transport office (RTO) will set up an autorickshaw stand at Kalamboli, exclusively for women drivers.

“This move is aimed at encouraging more women to drive autorickshaws. There are currently only 10 or 12 women auto drivers in Panvel. We want more of them to join this male-dominated profession,” said Himangi Patil, deputy regional traffic officer, Panvel.

The stand, part of the pilot project, will be set up near the Kalamboli bus stop. Depending on the response from commuters and autorickshaw drivers, more may be set up, said sources.
