Pre-monsoon cloud cover over Mumbai, expect light rain over weekend: Weather bureau

Minimum temperature rises; city may experience rainfall early next week, too

It was a grey, cloudy Friday morning in Mumbai, with the city seeing heavy cloud cover for the second time this week. However, no rainfall has been recorded so far. The weather bureau on Friday forecast cloudy weather conditions and light drizzle over the weekend.

“Cloudy conditions and light pre-monsoon showers over north Konkan, including Mumbai, are expected as a result of various weather systems, such as a trough stretching from north Karnataka up to Tamil Nadu, and another system over Kerala,” said Bishwambhar S, chief public relations officer, Regional Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The city may see rainfall early next week as well, on May 29 and 30, as a result of these weather systems. “On May 29, the south-west monsoon is expected to hit Kerala, and gradually start moving towards Karnataka over the next three days,” he said.

The day temperature on Friday at south Mumbai and the suburbs was close to the normal mark, both at 33.8 degrees Celsius. The night temperature at Santacruz and Colaba was 1.1 degree Celsius above normal.

A warning issued by IMD on Friday reads, “High waves in the range of 3-3.2 metres are expected till 11.30pm Saturday along the Maharashtra coast from Malvan to Vasai. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. The very severe cyclonic storm Mekunu has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, located over west central Arabian Sea and 100kms south southeast of Oman (Salalah).”
