MUMBAI: To curb noise pollution on roads, the Mumbai traffic police will start a 10-day anti-honking drive in the city from Thursday. Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of traffic police, had issued an order to all traffic divisions to take action against drivers, who unnecessarily honk, during the campaign. At the end of the day, the senior police inspectors of all the respective divisions have to submit a report.

The errant driver and his employer will be fined Rs500 each under section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Speaking to HT, a senior IPS officer said, “We have come out with this drive in order to spread awareness people about the increasing noise pollution. Drivers tend to honk despite knowing that they are stuck due to red signal or traffic congestion. This 10-day drive would help us curb this.”

“Both (driver and employer) will be penalised as they are not sensitive to noise pollution and attended health problems. At the end of the day, all the senior police inspectors will submit their report on the action taken against honkers,” the officer said.
