“We have not been able to establish his whereabouts and it is unlikely that he would have not contacted any of the officers he had been working for. He may have been killed,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

“On October 7, 2009, Rathod told his family that he was going to read newspapers nearby and left in a car,” the officer added. “Later that day, his family had learnt that the car had met with an accident on Palm Beach Road and the keys were in the ignition. But he was missing.”

Rathod, an alleged associate of gangster D K Rao, went missing just before Rao was released from jail.

His family lodged a missing person’s complaint with the Dharavi police.

His brother, Ashok, sent complaint letters to the Home Minister, commissioner of police, joint commissioner of police (Crime) and additional commissioner of police (Crime) and also moved the Bombay High Court in March.

Hindustan Times had reported about Rathod’s disappearance in January.
