Janki’s husband works in the Gulf along with his father and she stayed with Valli and a sister-in-law at Charkop.

Valli told the police that she did not like Janki because she was an extrovert.

Valli also suspected Janki of telling her mother about everything that would go on in the house. This would often create tension between the two families, said police sources who requested anonymity.

Valli told the police that Janki would spend many hours outside the house, which made her suspect an extra-marital affair.

“Whenever Janki would return, Valli would raise questions about her character. This led to fights time and again,” said a police source.

“On Friday, after another argument, Valli poured a bottle of kerosene on Janki and set her alight,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Sanjay Banerjee.

Neighbours rushed Janki to Bhagwati Hospital, where she is said to be battling for life.
