A 20-year-old labourer died on Tuesday after falling off the eight floor of the Collector’s Office building in Bandra (East).

The deceased has been identified as Jitendra Vishwakarma. The incident took place around 4pm when Vishwakarma was the fixing the window grill on the eight floor.

While Vishwakarma was working, a wooden plank placed on the window sill above him fell off. The plank hit Vishwakarma on the head due to which he lost his balance. As he tried to steady himself, the cable that he was fastened to snapped and he came crashing down.

On hearing a loud thud, other labourers rushed to the spot and found Vishwakarma lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the Gurunanak Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The hospital authorities then informed the Kherwadi police.

“On inspecting the site, we found that the labourers were not provided with mandatory safety gears and that there was negligence on part of the contractor and supervisor. Vishwakarma was not even wearing the head gear provided to all labourers,” said Awadhut Chavan, senior police inspector of Kherwadi police station. "We have booked the contractor and the supervisor of the site for causing death due to negligence," added Chavan.
