Tension gripped parts of central Mumbai after young men from a particular community were stopped by traffic policemen, for travelling on the wrong side of the road on Sunday evening.
To ensure the situation does not get out of hand, Rakesh Maria, commissioner of police, rushed to the spot at Parel.
The commissioner was seen speaking to people, asking them to maintain calm and to go home.
All shops in the area were shut down fearing escalated tensions.
Officials said they deployed policemen in areas around Lalbaug, Parel, after many youngsters riding on bikes got into arguments with the police.
Some vehicles were also damaged by the group, who allegedly also assaulted a few people. Officers said they have detained a few people in connection with damaging vehicles.
“We rushed policemen to the spot, who were on duty as a festival was being celebrated in the city. As of now, the situation is under control,” said a senior officer of the Mumbai police.
