Sonal Mehta, a freelance journalist and aspiring writer, approached the HC claiming that, Rann, which delves into the highly competitive world of television news reporting, is based on her script and screenplay.

Mehta, who has earlier worked with Varma as an assistant director, claimed he had asked her to come up with a script and had promised to involve her in the production if he liked the story.

Mehta claimed that she showed her script to Varma, who didn’t get back to her. On seeing the promotional clips of Rann on television, Mehta said that she was shocked at not being credit in news stories published about the film.

The case is likely to be heard on January 22. The film, which also has Riteish Deshmukh, Gul Panag, Rajat Kapoor and Mohnish Behl, is slated for release on January 29.
