Naik has been arrested for trying to extort money from a builder, who registered a case at the Dadar police station recently.

Deputy commissioner of police (detection) Nisar Tamboli confirmed that they had arrested Naik in a fresh case registered at Dadar police station on Wednesday.

Police officers said Naik had been trying to extort money from a city-based builder whose construction site was underway in the Dadar area. “The complainant had been receiving calls for quite some time now from Naik,” an officer from the Dadar police station said.

A case of extortion under section 383 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered with the Dadar police station.

In another case, where Naik has been accused by a BMC official of extortion, Naik had moved an anticipatory bail application before a sessions court at Sewri.

Naik’s advocate Bharat Mane contended that Naik had nothing to do with the extortion case. “Initially the police had taken a non-cognisable case against him which was later on converted into FIR under pressure,” Mane said. Mane contended that Naik has been falsely dragged into the case.
