Monsoon to reach Mumbai in 24 hours; stuck near Pune

Despite reports of a downpour in parts of the city, the local weather stations recorded negligible rainfall on Thursday. At Colaba, the rainfall recorded was nil while at Santacruz, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 0.2 millimetres of rainfall. However, the IMD forecasts monsoon to hit Mumbai in the next 24 hours.

According to the weathermen, the progress (called northern limit) of the monsoon has stagnated at Harnai near Pune. “The reduced momentum of an offshore trough stalled the progress of the monsoon on Thursday. If the monsoon does not progress ahead of Harnai on Friday, we will have to review our forecast,” said NY Apte, deputy director-general, IMD, western region.

The maximum temperature in the island city was 35 degree Celsius while at Santacruz, it was 33 degree Celsius. The minimum temperatures recorded were 26.6 degree Celsius at Colaba and 25.2 degree Celsius at Santacruz. “Compared to Wednesday, the sky was less overcast on Thursday. These fluctuations are normal during the pre-monsoon period and it will continue to be cloudy on Friday,” said VK Rajeev, director, IMD, western region.

The humidity levels recorded at Colaba and Santacruz were 65% and 78% respectively.

Though it rained sporadically in the city, Dombivli saw a continuous downpour from 2pm to 4pm. “I was caught unawares by the rain in Dombivli. It rained so heavily between 3 pm and 4pm that several drains got clogged close to station,” said Lekha Navare, a resident.
