More than 60% of unaided private schools that were audited early this year (for ranking) have failed eligibility norms that will qualify them to avail of government grants.

The school education department inspected 2,085 primary and middle schools across the state on parameters like infrastructure, quality of teaching and results, number of girl students, and overall attendance.
Minister of state for school education Fauzia Khan told the legislative assembly on Friday that though there were 6,000 unaided private schools in the state, only 2,085 had applied for the ranking process.
“Of these, 154 met the norms, while 1,364 failed the tests,” she said.
Accepting a suggestion that the ranking should be done by a private experts’ agency, Khan said the job would be outsourced soon.
She also said the schools would not be asked to apply, and the government would directly approach them instead.
The idea to rank unaided schools was implemented because the state wants to financially support permanently unaided schools in order to raise the standard of school education.
Last year, the school education department conducted a special drive to check attendance in private aided and government schools because it wanted to save the money that was being granted to schools which fudged attendance dates in order to avail of salary and non-salary grants.
