Mumbai: thieves break into ACP’s flat, steal gun

Being a senior police officer does not make one immune to theft. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Ravindra Khandagle, in charge of the ‘Missing Persons Bureau’, got a rude shock on Wednesday afternoon when he discovered that robbers had broken into his Shivaji Park flat and taken his service pistol. They had also taken cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.80 lakh.

They had also taken cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.80 lakh.

The break-in took place at the 56-year-old ACP’s third floor residence in Kamal Nivas on Veer Savarkar Marg around 10.30am, when there was no one at home.

While Khandagle had to attend a court hearing, his wife, a professor, was at college and their son was away, said Praveen Salunkhe, additional commissioner of police (central region).

The robber or robbers entered the house after breaking two locks on the main door. They then rummaged through the cupboard and took cash and jewellery and the gun, said Salunkhe. He said, “Among the things they took was a bag kept in the cupboard that had Khandagle’s 9MM glock pistol. As Khandagle had to visit court, he had left the pistol at home,” Salunkhe said.

The incident came to light when Khandagle’s wife returned home. The police are scanning through the footage of the CCTV camera installed outside a nursery operating out of a ground floor apartment in the building.

The police are also questioning the labourers working in a ground floor flat.

An officer from Shivaji Park police station said the police have got some leads from the CCTV footage that should help them identify the accused.
