Navi Mumbai institute honours Leander Paes, Ghulam Vahanvati

Attorney general Ghulam Vahanvati, executive chairman and managing director of Kamat Hotels Vithal Kamat and tennis player Leander Paes were awarded doctorates at the sixth annual convocation ceremony of Padmashree Dr DY Patil University on Friday.
Governor of Tripura Dr DY Patil, founder chancellor of the university, gave away the gold medals to the awardees in the presence of Dr Vijay Patil and Dr Ajeenkya Patil, presidents of the university.
"I believe that every individual deserves to be educated. If the country has to progress, every person should be granted the right," said Vahanvati.
"The hospitality industry is all about wastage and extravagance, but we proved that luxury need not always be insensitive. Twenty years ago, everybody laughed at my green approach. Today, they admit that it is possible. People's mindset has changed and we are glad that we played a small role in it," said Kamat.
Thanking his father, Paes said, "I have been felicitated several times and they have all been great honours. But the best honour is when I carry our national flag high after a win."
Nearly 1,233 graduates who completed their courses in medicine, dentistry, science and technology, management and education were given degrees on the occasion. Nineteen gold medals were awarded.
Dr Vijay Patil, said, "The eminent personalities awarded the doctorates this year have had outstanding careers and have set very high standard in their field. They are an inspiration to the youth."
Dr Karan Singh, MP and president of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Chancellor Dr BP Sabale presided over the function.
