They were rescued by the fire brigade after efforts that lasted an hour.

This is the second such incident after two college students on Monday and rescued in a similar manner.

Police said the couple had gone there in the morning and were sitting at least 45-50 metres from the promenade.

“They failed to notice the rising water level,” said senior police inspector Prakash George of Bandra police station.

Officials said that when the couples realised there was no way to get out, they shouted and raised their hands, signaling to passersby on the road.

“A pedestrian informed the police, who then came to their rescue with the fire brigade,” said another officer.

“The girls were rescued first, then the men” said a witness. One of the rescued men, while at the Bandra police station said: “It’s the first time we have come here. We never knew such a thing would happen to us.” The police have intensified their patrolling on the spot, after the recent incidents.

“What is baffling is that people still go deep inside, even though there are signboards at the beach, advising against doing this,” added George.
