“This year is important for us. There has been just one polio case. We are very close to the goal of complete eradication of the disease. The last case in Maharashtra was in September 2010 in Beed,” said Dr VN Kulkarni, Maharashtra state immunisation officer.

The single case detected this year was in Howrah, West Bengal. Last year, 42 cases of polio were reported in the country, of which five were from Maharashtra. India is one of four countries in the world where polio cases are reported.
