“Just because the road is used by VIP's, so much spending is not acceptable. Will the civic administration spend the same amount on the remaining 1,900 km of roads?” said BJP leader Yogesh Sagar.

The civic administration is expected to clarify why the expenditure is almost double of what it normally spends on roads in the city.

The HT had on February 16 reported that the civic body was spending Rs21 crore on a 1.8-km stretch from St. Stephen's Church near Kemp’s Corner to J Mehta Road at Napean Sea Road. According to the proposal, the road, which is used by minister and other VIPs, will be given a new surface by using the ‘mechanised mastic asphalt technology’, which is normally used for junctions.

"The administration must at least reconsider the technology they plan to use as speeding vehicles can skid off mechanised mastic asphalt," said Niyaz Vanu, NCP leader in the BMC.
