On Monday morning, a Sumo, WagonR and Maruti 800 were lined up at the toll naka when the trailer hit the Maruti 800 causing a pile-up.

Bhaskar Retade (48), his son Deepak (20) and relative Sudha Gawde (34) suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Workhardt Hospital, while the three occupants of the WagonR, including a 76-year-old, received minor injuries.

“The Sumo driver was not injured as it sustained the least impact,” said Police Sub-Inspector Ajit Jadhav.

Locals alerted the Navghar police and the driver of the trailer, Vetal Hari Sawant (35), was arrested.

“When we sent the driver for a medical examination, he tested positive in the alcohol test,” said Police Sub-Inspector Ajit Jadhav of the Navghar police station.

“We have arrested him on the charges of rash and negligent driving as well as drunken driving,” Jadhav added.
