State govt gives go-ahead to 11 realty projects facing environmental hurdles

Eleven realty projects, including those developed by Indiabulls, Raheja Pvt Ltd and Neelkanth techpark, which had been given stop-work notices for environmental violations on January 27 have been allowed to begin construction at their site.
In a written reply given by environment minister Sanjay Deotale to a question raised by Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Vinod Tawde at the Legislative Council, he said that a conditional approval has been given to the 11 projects for Rs10 lakh bank guarantee.
Tawde had raised a question on the notices sent by the Mumbai Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to developers for not adhering to environmental conditions.
He had asked for all the names of the developers and the present situation of the notices.
The projects had got stop-work notices after they had failed to get an approval from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, which is binding as per the clearance given in 2007.
The developers are supposed to obtain clearances from MPCB under the Water (prevention and control of pollution) Act 1974, the Air (prevention and control of pollution) Act 1981, before beginning any construction work at the site.
Also they need to apply for clearances under the Hazardous Wastes (management & handling) Rules, 1989, which, according to MPCB, was not done till January, a government official explained.
According to Deotale, apart from the 11 developers, 2 other developers, Suresh Estate Pvt Ltd and Turf Estate pvt Ltd, who were given notices, have fulfilled all the environmental conditions.
Tawde asked if the government will take any further action on the developers considering the illegalities, to which Deotale said since there are none, there is no question of taking action.
