The accolade for this year’s best teacher has gone to Bharat Sharma, principal of VG Vaze College, Mulund.

All the awardees will be felicitated on Republic Day.

“A lot of factors come into play such as research work and teaching methods. Even students are asked for their opinions on the teachers,” said Sharma, a biotechnology professor and a Ph.D guide.

“The one interesting method that I use is that I teach basics of science to even commerce and arts students so that they are well rounded,” he added.

Of 650 colleges affiliated to the university, only 19 applied for the recognition. And only nine teachers participated. The recognition enhances the college’s resume for grants and other facilities.

“It is up to the head of the institution to take the initiative to apply. Colleges and faculty should take pride in their college and work,” said Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.
