The city’s unit of Indian Youth Congress has registered 2.16 lakh members in a membership drive held early this year.

“There was a huge increase in the membership, especially among the women, who have showed a keen interest in joining politics,” said Krishna Hegde, who graduated from party’s youth wing last year to become a legislator. “The membership drive picked up after Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi visited the city.”
The organisational elections will be held soon.
The scrutiny of forms for the elections started from Monday and will continue till May 30.
“The field is open to a new generation of Youth Congress leaders across Mumbai to prove their mettle and rise up the ranks through an electoral process," said Deepender Hooda, Member of Parliament (MP) and returning officer for the elections.
The city’s youth unit has given good leaders to the party — Union Minister Gurudas Kamat, state ministers Suresh Shetty and Naseem Khan, MP Priya Dutt, MLA Baba Siddique and MLC Charan Singh Sapra were all part of the erstwhile Youth Congress from Mumbai region.
