Pop music sensation Demi Lovato has brought attention towards the stigma associated with mental health by detailing her personal journey to success in a new interview.

“The more you talk about mental illness, the less of a taboo it becomes,” Lovato told American Way for its July 2016 issue.

She spoke of growing up with body image issues from a young age, and how, looking at other teen stars before her, she was convinced her personal difficulties and career choice would scuttle her.

But incorporating her struggles into her creative output has enabled Lovato to inspire legions of fans and listeners to take courage as well.

People who attend her meet-and-greets will often tell her “You helped me get through this. Because of you, I stopped self-harming, or I got sober,” Lovato said.

“Hearing those things gave my life new meaning.”
