Twenty five-year-old Krishna Kaul is an unlikely candidate to be mistaken for a revolutionary, except that he is. His weapon of choice: music. Going by the name of Young Prozpekt, Krishna has been rapping since the age of 14. And after years of experimenting and investing himself in music, he released his first song, Kaisa Mera Desh, an anti-corruption anthem in the year 2010, which became a YouTube sensation in India.
Out with a new music video, called Vijay, Krishna’s target of choice this time is child labour and the lack of education for children from poor backgrounds. “These issues are always staring at our face. We don’t have the time to think about them, but poverty and the people it affects are all around us. Vijay came out of that observation,” Krishna says, who is also known for his outspoken criticism of the government, and for taking a shot at Indian politicians. Made in association with international charity organisation, Save The Children, the video was shot with street children in the Capital. “I had already written and shot the video but I and my team thought it made sense to legitimise it. So we approached the NGO and they really liked it, and decided to collaborate with us to promote this song,” says Kaul.
Apart from generating awareness about child labour, the money he earns from views of the video will be donated to the NGO’s relief operations in Uttrakhand, which was devastated by flash floods last month. Ask him if it is challenging to write his songs in Hindi, Krishna says, “Rap is a form of music that is meant to bring the masses together and that is what I am striving to do. It is not for a select bunch of people. It is supposed to be in one’s native language. So writing in Hindi makes sense. It is an inclusive, not exclusive, form of music.”
A few lines from the song Vijay
Maa baap majboor — mazdoor
Iske choteh kandon par boj hai khoob
Roz sehni padti hai dhool, Miti aur dhoop
Sapne lagne lage hain jhoot
Vijay hai iska naam
Lekin iski jeet abhi hai door
