Lewd go the lyrics

Vulgar lines leave film frat fuming, composers say it’s time we got real.

Bollywood is humming a new tune these days — that of a bold, risqué kind. The latest song hits in Hindi cinema — Pyaar Do Pyaar Lo from Thank You , Dum Maaro Dum from the movie by the same name, and Saali Bitch by singer Ishq Bector — have left brows raised and tongues wagging with disapproval for obscene lyrics.

“If the composers of these songs feel this is what the youth wants, they are very wrong. People are fuming that the lyrics of cult songs have been messed up and made so vulgar,” says singer Abhijeet Bhattarcharya, adding, “It is nothing but their desperation to sell themselves that can lead to such disgusting work.”

Senior lyricists are also up in arms. “This trend of crass lyrics has been massively rejected by the audiences of this country. These people are now trying such lyrics at their own risk, but there is no room for perversity in songs,” says noted songwriter Javed Akhtar, adding that he has turned down many projects that required him to pen obscene lyrics.

“If a person strips on the street, everyone discusses it but no one wants to take him home or have anything to do with him. Similarly, such songs are only leading to all talk and no connect,” says lyricist-adman Prasoon Joshi.

Veteran lyricist Sameer says, “I am absolutely against this theory that youngsters like obscenity. I think we need a serious check on what goes into the words.”

The makers of these songs, though, are unperturbed, thanks to the rising popularity of the tracks. Director Rohan Sippy, who is behind the changed lyrics of Dum Maaro Dum, says, “We wanted to create a provocative, aggressive track, and youngsters seem to be loving it!”

Hip-hopper Ishq Bector, whose Saali Bitch became a rage on the Web instantly, says, “If you don’t like it, refrain from listening to it. I think we need to grow up — these are the words we use in our day-to-day life, so why raise a hue and cry?”
