After the elevator brawl between popstar Beyonce Knowles’ sister, Solange and hubby Jay Z, Beyonce has made a very strong reference to the incident in her new track (Flawless). The Single Ladies hit maker goes on to sing “Of course sometimes sh*t go down, when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator”.

Not very subtle, eh? Most of the time in real-time life, musicians maintain silence about their personal life, but they often blurt their heart out in their songs. While Eminem’s rapped about his life, Taylor Swift’s songs were mostly inspired by her failed relationships. And who can forget Lana Del Rey’s dark music, inspired by her troubled love life?

We look at a few singers who’ve used music to express their feelings.

Robin Thicke

Get Her Back (June 2014)

After his wife Paula Patton left him, the Blurred Lines hitmaker was dedicated to get her back into his life. So much so, the singer after dedicating a song, dedicated the entire album to her. The video shows Thicke all battered and bruised, and also shows text messages shared between him and his wife. One reads "You drink too much" and another, "You embarrassed me".

Ed Sheeran

Don’t (July 2014)

It was reported that the singer went on to write the song about his rumoured girlfriend Ellie Goulding when the latter was believed to have shared a kiss with another singer while on tour. Ed Sheeran was quoted in an interview as saying, "If you date a songwriter, be prepared to have songs written about you. ‘If you do nice things, you’ll have nice songs. And if you do f*****-up things, you’ll get a horrible song." The song is a must listen, as Shreeran has not really been discreet in it (about the incident) at all.

Rita Ora

Poison (Aug 2014)

The singer, who was in a relationship with DJ Calvin Harris, admits the track is about "bad luck" in her personal life. The 23-year-old singer shared with a magazine: "Poison is about my bad luck with love. At one point, Rita sings — "Like a serpent, From the Garden of Eden, You are like poison, Running in my blood". Feisty eh? Reportedly, she’s dating rapper Richard Hilfiger now.

Selena Gomez

Hate to see you go (Aug 2014)

It was recently reported that Selena Gomez has produced a song, Hate to See You Go, but Love to Watch You Leave, that many view as signaling the end of her affair with singer Justin Bieber. It is believed that with the new song, the 22-year-old singer is putting the rumours — that she and Bieber are still an item — to an end.

Chris Brown

Loyal (March 2014)"

After thrashing Rihanna, the singer decided to trash her image with this song. Taking a jibe at her promiscuous behaviour, Chris Brown sang some harsh words about her that were backed by his then girlfriend, Karrueche Tran.
