“I won’t explain to anyone on how I brought up my child. As a mother, I know my responsibilities very well. I know that a few well-to-do people in the city have started taking moral classes on parenthood. As a mother, I would request them only to demand justice for Aabesh so that in the future, no other parents undergo the pain I am facing now,” said Rimjhim Dasgupta.

The 17-year old student of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School received grievous injuries while attending a friend’s birthday party at a posh housing complex in South Kolkata. He was declared brought dead at a private hospital.

A special investigating team (SIT) comprising top detectives of Kolkata Police is trying to probe the reasons behind Aabesh’s death. After primary investigation, it was revealed that all those present at the party were minors and most of them had consumed alcohol.

Soon after, a section of Trinamool leaders, including Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, started moral classes on parenthood. Chatterjee, in a Facebook post, mentioned that Aabesh did not die at the party. Aabesh died when his parents gave him money to celebrate without asking how he would spend the money.

“You won’t get them when your neighbours or relatives are in danger. In their society they don’t get invitation but celebrate parties. They drink with girls and don’t exchange hearts but bodies. Aabesh and his friends had already died,” the Mayor said in the post.

Although some officers claimed that Chatterjee’s son was also present at the party, he denied the allegation. “Yes, my son knows Aabesh and his friend. But he was not present at the party,” he said.

State power minister Sovondeb Chatterjee also joined the chorus, saying, “There is strong influence of Western culture on today’s youth. They should get rid of it fast.”
