CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday appointed political satirist and actor Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi as its new Punjab convener.

The party’s political affairs committee met in New Delhi on Sunday and cleared Ghuggi’s name for the post.
Barely six months old in the party, Ghuggi will replace Sucha Singh Chottepur, who was removed from the post on August 26 following a cash sting video. The move also virtually ends any chance of the estranged leader’s comeback into the party fold as convener.
Sanjay Singh, Punjab affairs in-charge, said that Ghuggi will soon meet the organisation heads in the state.
Faced with a vertical split along the Punjabi-versus-outsider fault-line, the party has already asked its 13 central observers appointed by Durgesh Pathak, the national organisation building in-charge, to go back.
Ghuggi joined AAP in February and was given the duty of focusing on the Majha region. He started his career as a Punjabi actor in Jalandhar Doordarshan Telefilms. He appeared in the lead role in a TV soap opera, Parchhaven, produced by Jalandhar Doordarshan.
Ghuggi became a household name after participating in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge reality show on TV. He has acted as a comedian in Bollywood and Punjabi movies.
