Baby with heart ailment dies as cops detain kin

KANPUR: An eight-month-old baby from Jalaun died for want of treatment after the Hamirpur police detained two of her family members on the basis of suspicion.
The baby girl, Sakshi, was suffering from a serious heart condition and had to be taken to Kanpur for treatment but police detained her uncles, Shailendra and Monu, in connection with the case of a man who went missing from Kuraur village in Hamirpur.
The men pleaded with the cops to let them go as the child’s condition was critical and her mother and grandmother would not be able to take her to Kanpur on her own, but the cops did not relent.
The police kept the two men in their custody for two days but could not find any evidence against them. The girl died at her house in Kadaura village on Friday. After the death, cops released the two.
On Friday evening, enraged family members and relatives stormed the house of superintendent of police, Hamirpur, Anil Kumar Singh, demanding an explanation.
The cops said they were within their right to detain the two men on suspicion. “Station officer of Kuraur is investigating the case. He came to know that Shailendra could be helpful in investigation and went to Kudaura village in Jalaun and brought him to police station,” the SP said.
Shailendra said: “Sakshi died on Friday noon. My mother came all the way to Kuraur to tell us about her death after which the police released us.”
