MUMBAI: Responding to the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) charges of criminal activity and violating service rules, lieutenant colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit — a key conspirator in the 2008 Malegaon blast case — claimed his actions were carried out with his seniors in the know.
The NIA in its chargesheet has alleged Purohit floated the Abhinav Bharat in 2006 while he was serving in the army, thereby violating service rules. Naming him as one of the key conspirators, the agency claimed he along with the other accused procured weapons and explosives using funds collected for the trust.
Purohit, however, denied the charges saying the trust was formed after informing his seniors and that he wanted to register it as a political party.
In his fresh bail plea filed before the special NI A court, Purohit said his actions were carried out in the line of the duty and that he was gathering intelligence using permissible methods. The accused sought bail after the Bombay high court directed him to the special court following the NIA’s supplementary charge sheet against him.
The NIA, however, denied Purohit’s counter allegations. Special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal said the agency will oppose his bail as it had sufficient evidence against him.
