NEW DELHI: Launching an all-round attack on the Modi government in the first week of the budget session, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said that the two-year-old government has tried to create nothing but a “bubble of achievement”.
In her speech at the Congress parliamentary meeting, Gandhi — from the GDP figures to the foreign policy — tore apart several claims of success by the Modi government. “Deception is not new to this ruling party.
They are skilled at ignoring facts to propagate false claims and orchestrating unsubstantiated charges against the Opposition, especially the Congress,” said Gandhi, hinting at the issues such as Agusta Westland chopper scam.
Taking potshots at Modi’s foreign policy initiatives, the Congress president charged the government for following an incoherent and inconsistent foreign policy “despite PM’s frequent travels abroad, his equally frequent embraces of world leaders and impromptu birthday call.”
“Pakistan policy oscillates from one extreme to other. Relations with Nepal are at an all-time low. Its ill-prepared policy on the NSG membership has exposed us to a snub and is in complete contrast to what the UPA had achieved in 2008,” Gandhi told her party MPs.
She also didn’t spare Modi at the economic front. At a time, when the government is looking forward to the Congress’ support for passing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill , Gandhi said, “Modi government’s hollow claims on inflation have been exposed recently by no less than the RBI governor.”
She also mentioned how the BJP blocked “every important FDI initiative of the UPA government but now it has put in place a free-for-all policy even in a sensitive sector like defence.”
In her speech, Gandhi rekindled the debate over the NDA government’s GDP calculation, pointing out that even a section of the BJP has questioned the veracity of the new system to calculate the country’s economic growth.
Gandhi mentioned lowest rate of job creation in six years coupled with retrenchment of industrial works and loss of jobs in export sector has brought “misery” for the youth.
