ROHTAK: The alleged gang rape of a Dalit woman in Haryana took a new turn with police arresting two men who are not among five accused in the case which has sparked a political war between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.
The 21-year-old woman had named five men of sexually assaulting her in Rohtak on July 13, three years after the same people had gang-raped her. She said the second assault was in retaliation for her refusal to withdraw her case against them for the first incident.
Police have arrested three of the f ive accused, Amit, Jagmohan and Sandeep, and have launched a manhunt for Akash and Mausam.
The three have denied the charge and said they were not in Rohtak on the day of the alleged crime. They also claimed that the girl’s family was asking for Rs 50 lakh from them to withdraw the 2013 case in which they were granted bail.
Police said that two other men were arrested since Sunday - identified as Sandeep Hooda and Parmod Kumar – and both have allegedly confessed to having had intercourse with her on July 13.
Police said they have CCTV footage which purportedly shows the woman accompanying Kumar, a health worker, to a hotel where they were joined by Hooda.
Rohtak superintendent of police Rakesh Arya said the three had allegedly consumed liquor at the hotel. The woman was later picked up by police Sukhpura Chowk in a drunk state, he added.
Police quoted Hooda as saying that he knew the girl and she had called him to meet her on the day of the alleged rape.
