On Valentine’s Day, a 24-year-old woman was shot and critically injured, allegedly by a 26-year-old neighbour, on Wednesday morning.

The police said the woman was shot as she had turned down a marriage proposal from the 26-year-old man. The incident took place at a local market in Hapur’s Pilkhuwa area.

The police said the accused had called the woman and asked her to meet him at a market in Pootha Hussainpur. The accused stayed in the same locality as the woman and knew her well.

According to the police, the woman has been staying at her parents’ house following a marital discord with her husband. She had got married to a man from Bulandshahr four years ago.

“She got married four years ago but was staying with her parents for the last 13 months. On Wednesday, the accused called her to a local market, put forward a marriage proposal and asked her to elope with him. The woman rejected his proposal. Angered by this, the accused pulled out a countrymade weapon and fired two shots at her,” Pawan Kumar, circle officer, Pilkhuwa, said.

The police said the victim and the accused knew each other for the last four to five months. The first shot fired by Kumar hit the woman in her chest. The second shot was to her face, the police said.

“He (the accused) asked me to elope with him. When I refused, he fired at me. He pulled out the weapon from his pocket and fired at me. It was around 8.30am when the incident took place,” the injured woman said.

After nearly three hours, the woman was rushed to a hospital in Meerut for treatment.

“She was sent to Meerut only after nearly three hours as her family members were not supportive of her as she had been staying away from her husband. Later, we had to tell them sternly to accompany our personnel and take her to a hospital for treatment. The shot to her chest went right through her body,” Kumar said.

“The doctors said that she has a slim chance of survival,” Kumar said.

Following the firing, locals nabbed Kumar and handed him over to the police. The officials said that the man has a criminal background.
