After the Maharashtra director general of police (DGP) directed the state police to lodge an FIR against builders on the basis of complaints lodged by buyers for deficiency of service, homebuyers in Indirapuram tweeted to the Uttar Pradesh DGP demanding a similar provision in the state.

On Friday, Alok Kumar, chairman of Federation of Apartment Owner’s Association (FAOA) tweeted to the official twitter handles of UP DGP and the UP Police. He also received a reply from the official handle of the UP Police on Saturday enquiring about the issue.

“Today, if buyers who have been cheated by the builder approach the police, they are told that no crime has been committed and hence no FIR will be lodged,” said Kumar.

“However, on July 1, the circular issued by the Maharashta DGP gives buyers the right to lodge an FIR under sections of fraud if they have been cheated by the builder,” he added.

Further, the federation has also sent an official letter to the UP DGP demanding that a similar circular be issued by the UP police.

“If such a rule can be applied in Maharashtra, there must be a provision to apply the same here in Uttar Pradesh too. We hope the DGP hears our grievances,” said Kumar.
