The police said the attacker, a man from Govindpuri locality, used an axe to inflict multiple blows on the woman until the woman died, the police said.

The woman had gone to a market to make some purchases and was on her way home, when she was allegedly waylaid by the man, identified as Sachin Sharma, who inflicted multiple blows on her with an axe. The woman died on the spot, the police said.

“The accused has been arrested. He told us that he used to know the woman for many years and used to have a relationship with her. However, the woman got married to someone else. He also told use that whenever the woman visited her parents in Modi Nagar, they used to meet,” HN Singh, senior superintendent of police, Ghaziabad, said.

“Previously, there were some objections raised by the woman. On February 9, the police booked the man for breach of peace on a complaint lodged by the woman. He said that he was called to her parent’s house, where he was allegedly beaten and shamed. The woman’s family said that the man came to their house and misbehaved with their family members previously,” SSP Singh said.

The body of the woman lay in a pool of blood on the street after Sharma had injured her, after which the police reached the spot. Hundreds of local residents had gathered at the spot.

The police said that the incident on February 9 had left the man infuriated and he was on the lookout to avenge the events of that day.

The woman, in April 2017, had married a man from Loni and had come to her parents’ house for appearing in her examinations and clearing her backlogs. She was allegedly attacked by Sharma in a public place that is next to her house.

“She had gone to the market to buy some medicines. She had come to her parent’s house for appearing in her class 10 examinations. Three days ago, Sharma, along with some other men, had harassed her on the road. When she told her family, they raised an objection and reported the matter to police. Later, Sharma had also threatened to kill her,” Ram Lal Maurya, a resident, said.
