Noida Sector 18 parking lot misses yet another deadline

The city’s first multilevel car parking facility being constructed in the biggest commercial hub — Sector 18 — missed its October 30 deadline.
The project was started on July 22, 2013, and was supposed to be completed by July 2015 but has missed several deadlines now. The Noida authority has set a new deadline of March 2018 for the project.
“The private agency has failed to finish the work as per the deadline of October 30. We have imposed a penalty of Rs1 crore on the agency for slow construction work. If it will not finish the work by March 2018, we will take strict action,” said SC Mishra, senior project engineer of the Noida authority.
He said the private agency’s work was slowed down due to financial issues. “Now we are releasing funds so that the facility can be completed and opened to the public,” said Mishra.
Previously, Amit Mohan Prasad, then Noida authority chief executive officer, had fixed October 2 as the opening date but it was later rescheduled to October 30.
“The agency is yet to finish working on shafts and also complete plastering of the walls. We hope that it will be ready to be opened in March 2018 because the agency has ample time to finish the remaining work,” said Mishra.
The Sector 18 car parking facility is expected to address traffic congestion issue in and around Sector 18, the city’s largest commercial hub.
The authority will also hire an operator for managing operations of the facility. “We will soon hire an agency that will manage operations of this facility once it is ready,” said Mishra.
The eight-level parking facility will accommodate over 3,000 cars. The authority failed to complete the parking facility as per scheduled deadline because the contractor had stopped work mid-way.
In May 2015, the Noida authority had partially opened two floors of the facility while it was under construction. However, KR Chitra, a resident, moved Allahabad high court in September 2015 and obtained a stay on the grounds that it was unsafe to use the building for parking while it was still being built. Disposing of the matter on February 4, the high court directed the Noida authority to complete the project at the earliest and not to allow parking until the work is over.
The parking area in Sector 18 market is always filled to capacity and the vehicles often spill over on to the roads, causing difficulties for visitors and traders, particularly during the weekend.
Officials said the authority has also decided on new parking rates for the Sector 18 parking lot.
“We will charge Rs10 per hour for four-wheeler and Rs5 per hour for two-wheelers. Traders can get a monthly pass for Rs2,000 for four-wheelers and Rs1,000 for two-wheelers. To discourage parking on roads, which causes congestion, we will charge Rs20 per hour for four-wheelers and Rs10 per hour for two-wheelers,” said Mishra.
At present, the authority charges a flat Rs20 for four-wheelers and Rs10 for two-wheelers from 9am to 11pm.
